Getting started
Set up a workspace, choose your apps, add data, and find your way around Matte.
A workspace brings your team, records, apps, and agents together. Start with the app you need, add a few real records, and build the views your team will use every day.
Create your account and workspace
You can belong to more than one workspace. Each workspace has its own members, installed apps, records, settings, and billing. Check the workspace name before importing data or changing team settings.
- Sign up with your email address and password, or use Sign up with Google when it is available. Complete the email verification step if Matte asks for it.
- Create a workspace for your team. Give it a recognizable name, choose its workspace URL, and optionally personalize its image or icon. You can also request to join an existing workspace instead of creating another one.
- Review the trial options shown during setup. The no-card trial does not create automatic charges. The card trial uses secure checkout and explains its renewal terms before you continue.
- Choose your first app, or select Start with a blank workspace. New apps installed during setup start empty, ready for your own records.
Choose the work you want to organize
Apps add purpose-built lists, fields, relationships, and workspace navigation. You can extend those lists with your own fields or create separate custom objects. A blank workspace is also a valid starting point when you want to build your own structure.
Use Add apps to review what is available in your workspace. Availability and the number of included apps depend on your plan. Installing an app and having permission to use it are separate requirements; an administrator may need to adjust your access.
- Start with an app. Use an app when its records and workflows match the work you need to organize. It gives your team a shared starting structure.
- Extend what you have. Add custom fields, relationships, and saved views to fit the details your team needs.
- Build a custom list. Create an object when you need to track a different kind of record. It uses the same views, permissions, and record tools as other supported lists.
Understand the building blocks
- Objects. An object is a list of one kind of thing, such as Items, Suppliers, or Employees. It is similar to a spreadsheet table.
- Records. A record is one entry in that list: one item, one supplier, or one employee.
- Fields. Fields hold the details for each record, such as a name, date, quantity, status, or link to another record.
- Views. A view presents the same records with a useful layout and rules. A filtered table and a board can show the same underlying records.
- Folders. Folders organize records within a list when that object supports them. Inventory folders also identify the locations where stock is held.
Add your first records
- Open the list you want to populate and create a record. Fill in its required fields, then save it.
- If your data already lives in a spreadsheet, open Import. Select a file or paste cells, match the columns, and review the validation results before importing.
- Open a saved record to check its details and relationships. Use Activity to see changes and leave a comment when teammates need context.
- Choose useful columns, add filters or sorting, and save a view with a clear name. Invite teammates once the basic structure is ready.
For Inventory Tracking, item definitions and stock quantities are different records. Create or import the item catalog, then add stock to the correct Inventory folder. The inventory guides explain this distinction.
Find your way around
The sidebar shows the apps and lists you can access. Search helps you find records, views, pages, orders, counts, and permitted chat content across the workspace. Open a record from the results to continue working without manually browsing each list.
Your profile menu opens personal settings and workspace settings. Personal settings control your account and interface preferences. Workspace settings control shared configuration, people, access, plans, and billing. Search inside either settings area to jump to a specific option.
In an Inventory Tracking workspace, Take the tour is available through Help and the command menu. Tour stops follow the pages installed in your workspace and your access to them.
A practical first setup
Start with a small, representative set of records. Check names, units, dates, links, and required fields before loading the rest. This makes it easier to catch a column mapped to the wrong field or a missing relationship.
Then agree on who owns the data, who can change it, and which views the team should use. An agent can help work with the records it is allowed to access, but the app must be installed and the needed permissions must be in place.
If you entered through a demo workspace, use its save or keep-workspace flow to retain your work. Demo workspaces are temporary and have different account and billing controls from regular workspaces.
